Our Programs

Misconceptions and a lack of knowledge are evident relating to the learning potential of people with Down syndrome. This has led teachers, psychologists and others to have low expectations of them. Most programs - including those in the public school system - prioritize “supervision,” over education. When young people reach adolescence, they are often moved to areas or programs that do not provide ongoing instruction or learning. Once past high school, unfortunately, there are even fewer opportunities.

The truth is, people with Down syndrome often have only mild-to-moderate intellectual impairment and are fully capable of becoming educated, self-sufficient adults. Upon reaching adolescence, they are particularly more open to learning. If given meaningful instruction in academic, social and language development, supplemented with optimum health care, the result can be significantly enhanced quality of life. They gain self-confidence, self reliance, independence, and resourcefulness. They establish better social relationships and become positive contributors to their community overall.

At the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, our educational programs are designed to provide the necessary skills for quality and purposeful inclusion. We focus on four areas:

academics                        speech and language development

social and emotional development                  optimum health
