The Centre for Specialized Learning (CSL)
| Letter from the Executive Director
Dear friends, Welcome to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation. Founded in 1995, the goal of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation is to provide relevant, reliable and timely information on the latest research and educational programs for people of all ages with Down syndrome. Our mission is to help each person with Down syndrome reach their individual potential by providing specific and relevant educational instruction. The guiding philosophy was established by our founder Josephine Mills, and has become ingrained in who we are and what we do. At its core is respect for individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, and the attitude that there is more that can be done, by them and for them. Our expectations of their abilities are high, and so are our standards. We are universally recognized as a centre for Down syndrome excellence - valued for our collaborative research, our information dissemination, and our affiliations and partnerships with experts from a variety of backgrounds. The Foundation uses a multi-disciplinary team approach of professionals and researchers to study individual differences and commonalities in the areas of brain development, speech and language, auditory processing, motor control, and much more. Our research enables us to initiate pilot projects and develop model programs that target the unique learning styles of individuals with Down syndrome. Our programs range from individual speech and language services, to group literacy programs, to academic college age programs, to fun summer camps and music programs. We disseminate information to families, students, professionals and researchers through our website, our library services and our quarterly newsletter Hand in Hand. We welcome your feedback, your commitment, and your continued support, and we thank you for helping us make the future brighter for people with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Sincerely, |
