The Ames Family Foundation has generously granted $20,000 towards the production of a series of videos to support speech and language for children with Down syndrome.

The Ames Family Foundation has generously granted $20,000 towards the production of a series of videos to support speech and language for children with Down syndrome.

Communication difficulties present as one of the most significant challenges facing children with Down syndrome. Unless addressed, these difficulties can persist into adulthood and severely limit opportunities for work and successful social inclusion.

The communication video series will build on our successful reading video series, which have had over 50,000 views to date, and have helped families and practitioners around the world develop the reading skills of children with Down syndrome.

The following is a brief outline of the goals for the first two videos we have planned:

Video #1: Understanding and Expression of Language in Down Syndrome

• Describe common language profiles at different stages of development.
• Set communication goals and planning for success.
• Show examples of using effective teaching strategies and supports.
• Discuss where to find resources.

Video #2: Supporting Social Communication and Participation

• Describe common social communication profiles.
• Give examples of daily communication opportunities (eg. at school or in the community).
• Show strategies for supporting independent communication, including earlier developing social communication and higher level conversation skills.
• Demonstrate use of augmentative communication.
• Share examples of online and community resources.

Thank you very much to the Ames Family Foundation for making this exciting project possible!
