The Down Syndrome Research Foundation occupies a 12,000 square foot building on Sperling Avenue in Burnaby. Facilities include a MEG laboratory, speech and language area, a multi-media library, classroom space for educational programs and a preschool. This is one of the few centres devoted to Down Syndrome and involves a proactive collaboration of practitioners, academics, basic scientific researchers, parents, industry partners, and community stakeholders.
MEG Laboratory
The MEG Laboratory at the DSRF is a unique community based research lab that currently has active research collaborations with Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, McMaster University, and other institutions including in British Columbia the Children and Women’s Hospital, Queen Alexandra Centre for Children's Health, Human Early Learning Partnership, and a private sector partner VSM Medtech (Coquitlam, BC). The laboratory houses a whole head MEG system (151 sensor CTF Omega, manufactured by VSM Mectech) within a magnetically shielded room and has facilities for signal processing of brain imaging data.
Speech and Language Area
This area is utilized for both group and individual Speech and Language Therapy sessions . Currently our speech language pathologist is involved in various research projects related to speech and language development in people with Down Syndrome. Beginning in 2009, games and toys designed to help develop speech and communication skills will be available for loan through our Toy Lending Library .
Preschool Area
The DSRF's Early Foundations Preschool , situated on the main floor of the building, is a large 1500 square foot space with an outdoor playground. It is filled with new toys and equipment featuring carefully selected developmentally appropriate learning materials. This colourful preschool, filled with natural light, is the perfect environment for early learning.
Classroom & Computer Lab
On the upper level of the building is the classroom and computer lab. The classroom is home to the Latch-On program. The computer lab is accessible to all students and volunteers and is used regularly.
Multi-Media Library
A resource library provides reference, research, referral services, and a lending library staffed by a fulltime librarian. Reference and referral services are provided to members and non-members. Research services are provided to affiliated researchers while lending privileges of library materials are available to all current members.
Boardroom
The DSRF boardroom is a large space equiped with a whiteboard, projector and a television with a DVD player. Predominantly used by DSRF staff for meetings and programs, the boardroom is also available for rent.
