Benefits of Bocce
Nothing says summer like bocce, so it was appropriate that the sun shone brightly on the 16 teams that gathered at the North Vancouver bocce pits on August 25 for the 12th Annual Benefits of Bocce tournament.
It was a day of fun, food, friends and fundraising in support of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation. It didn’t take long for newcomers to learn why others have described it as their favourite charitable event of the year, as good natured rivalries quickly sprung up amongst the 64 players vying for the championship trophy.
In the end, it was the Incrediballs who stood tallest, adding the BoB title to Morneau Shepell’s impressive resumé that already included a 2011 Up the Down Market Vancouver victory - a title they will attempt to defend later this month. Show No Mercer, DSRF Diamonds and Aon Hewitt rounded out the top four.
Benefits of Bocce has a long, proud tradition of raising funds for worthy charitable causes, and this year was no different as DSRF adopted the tournament as an annual event. Overall net proceeds exceeded $8,000 - a total we anticipate growing in future years. The total included more than $2,000 in proceeds from a silent auction that featured prizes donated by more than 20 local businesses.
Participants were treated to a scrumptious Italian lunch prepared by Presto Catering, along with a mid-afternoon snack courtesy of Boston Pizza.
On behalf of DSRF’s students, families, board and staff, thank you to all players, donors, sponsors and volunteers for standing “Together. Hand in Hand.” with all who are walking the journey of Down syndrome. A special thank you to Burk Humphrey, Alan Black and other past members of the BoB organizing committee for establishing a wonderful legacy and assisting with this year’s transition.
