Companies That Make a Difference

There have been many companies who have offered us their on-going support in a variety of important ways. Whether financial, in kind, or through volunteer work hours, their help has enabled the DSRF to continue to grow as an organization and provide services to thousands of children and adults with Down syndrome, their families, and the professionals who work with them.

Without our sponsors we would not exist. Therefore, to honour their generosity, we wish to profile the sponsoring corporations which have truly made a difference.

Partnering with the Down Syndrome Research Foundation is a perfect match for Air Canada's philanthropic focus: enhancing the quality of life for Canadian children and their families. It enables us to be a player in its achievements, a way for us to be involved. Working with the DSRF offers us the opportunity to truly make a difference and give back to the community.

Since the beginning of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, Mercer has been an unstinting and loyal supporter of the DSRF.

It was a Mercer employee who invented the Up the Down Market Dinners which enabled DSRF to raise initial development funds, and which continues to be DSRF's most successful (and some may argue, our most fun) annual fundraiser. We have sponsored the Vancouver Dinners since their inception, consistently buying a couple of tables each year. In each city where the Up The Down Market Dinners are held – Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal - a senior staff member at Mercer plays an active role in planning and making them a success. Most recently, the company has become a national sponsor-in-kind of the Dinners through support of printers which are used to support the stock market trading game played during the Up the Down Market Dinners .

Mercer is also a supporter of our annual fundraiser, Run Up for Down Syndrome , a reliable provider of volunteers for all manner of events, and has been the sponsor of a winning tree for our annual Christmas Breakfast .

Founded in Vancouver in 1945, Mercer has grown to become the worlds largest retirement, benefits, compensation, investment and communications consulting firm. In addition to 14 offices across the country, Mercer Human Resource Consulting is currently serving clients from 150 cities in 40 countries or territories around the world.

The Vancouver Sun has been a part of this community since 1912. That means we have developed a unique role in the community; and it is a role that we take very seriously. The Vancouver Sun newspaper sponsors and supports many charitable, cultural, educational and sporting events throughout the year For example, The Vancouver Sun Run is the largest 10K run in Canada; and the second largest in North America. The 2008 event set an attendance record with 59,179 participants from around the world and it raised valuable funds for amateur sports.

While supporting many community charities, Pacific Newspaper Group also has its own charities. One of them is The Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund, which was established in 1981 to help B.C.''s needy children and youths. It funds very worthwhile programs all year round. The Vancouver Sun Raise-a-Reader program supports children''s literacy programs throughout British Columbia and raised over $175,000 last year alone. On Raise-a-Reader day each October, celebrities hawk copies of The Vancouver Sun on the streets in exchange for donations, as well as contributing all proceeds of single-copy newspaper sales to the Raise-a-Reader campaign.

We firmly support the Down Syndrome Research Foundation and have backed the " Up the Down Market ” Charity Stock Game since its inception. This is a relationship that The Vancouver Sun values most highly and will continue to support.
