DSRF and COVID-19

Details on the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation's reopening plan after the COVID-19 lockdown

As the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation reopens after the COVID-19 lockdown, we are prioritizing the health of our students, families, staff and supporters above all. We are in regular communication with WorkSafe BC and local health authorities, and we have and will continue to adhere to their guidance as we work to restore regular services and programming.

COVID-19 Vaccination Safety for Individuals with Down Syndrome

The Trisomy 21 Research Society recently conducted a study to assess the safety of COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals with Down syndrome. Their findings confirm the safety and efficacy of the vaccines. Given the well-established elevated risk among people with Down syndrome for more severe and fatal cases of COVID-19, DSRF strongly recommends that all people with Down syndrome receive vaccination at the earliest opportunity.

In line with data from the general population, the T21RS survey of 1708 vaccinated individuals with Down syndrome shows that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for individuals with Down syndrome:

  • Most people had either no or very mild reactions after vaccination
  • Less than 1% of the vaccinated individuals with Down syndrome contracted COVID-19 after vaccination
  • All individuals with Down syndrome who had COVID-19 after vaccination fully recovered

We recognize that the return to normal is not something that will happen overnight. DSRF's reopening will take place in stages, and each step will look different than the previous one. This will not be easy for our clients with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, but we are committed to helping our clients and families through the process to the best of our ability. We look forward to seeing you soon!
