What is Down Syndrome?

Mental Wellness for Individuals with Down Syndrome and Their Families

People with Down syndrome and their caregivers have a heightened risk of mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, elevated stress levels, and more. Feeling Down, Looking Up: Mental Health and Down Syndrome examines these issues through the eyes of four families (including two self-advocates), who generously share their personal mental health journeys. The film is hosted by DSRF's Dr. Susan Fawcett, who lends her unique expertise as a mental health professional specializing in Down syndrome. Feeling Down, Looking Up also features motion graphics created by Joe Woloshyn, who just happens to have Down syndrome (and a dad who's a major motion picture special effects professional). Funded in part by the Government of Canada.

Feeling Down, Looking Up: Mental Health and Down Syndrome

Many parents experience unhelpful patterns of thought that negatively impact their ability to parent effectively and confidently, and that may increase feelings of guilt or anxiety. Engaging in a regular mindfulness practice has been proven to have many benefits for parents of children with developmental disabilities, including increased parenting satisfaction and presence during tough parenting tasks, as well as better child behaviour. In this session, as well as during the remaining videos in the series, parents will learn a variety of mindfulness practices. Presenter: Susan Fawcett, PhD, RSLP Director of Therapy, Behaviour and Family Support, Down Syndrome Resource Foundation Susan began her career at DSRF as the head Speech-Language Pathologist from 2003 to 2019, and helped develop the therapy, adult, and summer programs during that time. She has been thrilled to watch the therapy and teaching team and programs grow vastly since she started. Getting to know families over a long period of time and having a blast playing with the children she sees are Susan’s favourite aspects of her job. While enjoying a sessional teaching position in the education department at SFU, Susan encouraged the students to be more involved, and several of these students have become DSRF volunteers or staff. Susan has particular interest in the areas of social communication, mental health and problem behaviour in people with Down syndrome, as well as giving families the positive reinforcement they deserve. As part of completing her doctoral degree with Dr. Joe Lucyshyn in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education in 2020, she completed a dissertation project evaluating a preventative parent training program for families of young children with Down syndrome who exhibit mild-to-moderate problem behaviour. During her schooling, Susan also completed a two-year practicum with a clinical psychologist at the Vancouver CBT Centre, where she learned how to provide cognitive-behaviour therapy techniques to adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses such as depression and anxiety.

The learning profile of students with Down syndrome is used as a foundation for understanding how reading instruction can be modified and adapted to meet the unique needs of these learners. Viewers are introduced to the fun, hands on methods used to teach beginning readers in the DSRF’s one to one reading program. Danielle also looks at how early reading instruction can be beneficial for increasing engagement, expressive and receptive language and reading and listening comprehension.
